Statewide Winter Salts Efforts

Maryland State Highway Administration

Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) has already shown progress in road salt reductions after adopting new opportunities for improvement. These practices include increased proactive anti-icing, tracking salt usage and application rates, and deploying new equipment with Automatic Vehicle Location systems to improve communications. SHA updated their Statewide Salt Management Plan in 2019 to increase safety, reduce costs, and improve the environment.

In the fall and winter, you can track plows in your neighborhood using SHA's S.T.O.R.M. application.

Salt Application Training

The Department is in the process of creating training materials, program, and certification. We anticipate more information about Maryland specific training for Commercial Applicators and Property Managers to be available soon.

Permit Language

To reduce winter salts entering Maryland's ecosystems and the Chesapeake Bay, MDE has put language into Phase 1 MS4 permits for counties to develop a County Salt Management Plan (SMP). A plan for evaluation of new equipment and methods, including outreach, trainings, tracking and reporting.
